So, the best method to keep the food poisoning away is by maintaining the good standards of food hygiene when preparing, handling and storing food. Most of the food poisoning cases are mild and you get better without any treatment. But some cases may be so severe that you need to go to a hospital for treatment. The following steps will help you to prevent from food poisoning:-
1. Habit of Washing Hands, Utensils and Food Surfaces Regularly
It is good to adopt the habit of washing hands well with soap & water before & after handling or preparing food, after going to the toilet or changing a baby’s nappy and after touching bins or pets. Use hot, soapy water to wash utensils and other surfaces you use.
2. Try to Cook Food at Safe Temperature
Cooking the food at right temperature will save you from food poisoning. You can kill harmful infectious organisms from food by cooking the food at right temperature. Always make sure that food is cooked thoroughly and is steaming hot in the middle. If you are cooking meat and to check that meat is cooked, insert a knife into the thickest or deepest part. If the juices are clear and there is no pink or red meat, then it is fully cooked.
3. Refrigerating or Chilling the Food
There are certain foods that need to be kept at the right temperature to prevent harmful bacteria from growing. Check the storage instructions that are always given on the label. If the food that needs to be chilled or refrigerate is left at room temperature, bacteria or infectious organisms may grow and multiply to an unsafe point. Always keep the leftover cooked food in your fridge or freezer.
4. Cross-contamination Happening
Cross-contamination happens when bacteria are transferred from raw food to other food. It is good to store raw and ready to eat food separately. Bacteria can also spread to food through your hands, work surfaces, utensils or equipments you use.
5. Smell it but Don’t Taste it
If you left the food at room temperature for long time contains bacteria and it becomes difficult to destroy them by cooking. Don’t try to taste the food that you’re unsure about just throw it out. Even if it looks and smells fine, it may not be safe to eat.
